What are you doing to stand out from the competition? It is cheaper to retain a customer than find a new one.: Packaging

Are you looking for a way to make your company's promotional or eCommerce packages stand out in a crowded marketplace? Why not add branding power to your packages? More and more products are being purchased online and shipped via Fedex, UPS, & USPS direct to consumers every year, and most are shipped in a plain brown box, clear carton sealing tape, and clear Bubble Wrap®. Or a plain yellow Bubble Mailer. WHY? As an eCommerce company, don't you find it hard to stand out from your competition? You purchase PPC ads, Banner ads, Newspaper advertisements. It is hard and expensive to find a new client or customer. It is cheap to retain a current customer. Are you trying to stand out from your competition, or are you copying what they do? I call it blending in. You have to do something different, something that makes you stand out in your customers mind in order to retain that customer, especially if you sell an item that they can get from any number of places.

Once a customer purchases from your company, you should be trying to convert that customer into a long term, repeat customer. Don't take that one order for granted. Try and turn that one purchase in another, and another. It is CHEAPER to retain a customer than to add new customers. Why not differentiate yourself from the crowd and add a little pizazz to your packaging, while adding value to the customer and your company. A customer is more likely to remember the company or website name that sent them exactly what they ordered, but with a little extra. Be that a small gift or unique packaging.

Take this example. If you receive ten packages today, from ten different companies. Lets just say that inside of each package, were the same identical widget. Nine were shipped in the same type of generic, plain yellow bubble mailer or brown box, and one was shipped in a Color Bubble Mailer or Box with Color Packaging Tape, Color Bubble Wrap, or Color Tissue Paper inside. Which company are you going to remember? One of the nine companies that did nothing to stand out, or the one that stood out with the unique packaging?

A month down the road, when you need another widget, which company is going to stand out in your mind? Are you going to remember the names of the nine companies that sent your item in generic packaging? Or the one that stood out? Let's look at the nine packages for now. Same product, same generic packaging, same shipping speed, let's also say they all cost the same. Now, lets say a month later you need one additional unit or ten. Which of the nine companies, 1.) Will you remember? 2.) Will earn your business for the additional widget that you now need? You will probably just pick one randomly or do another search and possibly make your new purchase from whomever pops up in search, maybe not even one of the nine that you purchased from before?

Now imagine the name of your company is "Red Widgets", or "The Green Widget", or "Blue Moon", or Shamrock (green), or Pumpkin (orange), or Fire This (red). Your already sending a package to the customer, why not stand out, why not crate a trigger? The color of the packaging now acts as a trigger or reminder of the name of the company the purchase was made, verses the plain packaging the other nine companies sent, and leaving no hint of their company or website name in your mind.
