Shipping Tip of the Day - What is Dimensional Weight ? ( Dim Weight )

Have you heard the term Dimensional weight or dim weight? For the past several years the major small parcel carriers have been implementing dim weight more and more. What is dim weight you ask? Dim weight is the dimensional weight of a package based on it's size, not the actual weight. To find the dim weight of your package, take the length and multiply it by the width, then by the height, then divide that number by the divisor of 139. This is the current formula UPS and Fedex use to calculate dimensional weight.

Let's look at an example,, say you are shipping a 2 pound teddy bear in a 12 inch by 12 inch by 12 inch box. You think you will pay the 2 pound shipping rate, right? Wrong! You will be charged based on the higher of the two. The dimensional weight of this 12 by 12 by 12 inch box is 12.43, or rounded up to 13 pounds.. Meaning this package will be charged at the 13 pound rate. So always ship your products in the smallest size package possible, while ensuring that your product will make it to it's destination safely.
